Local players worried about rumors

of Polish Yahoo! version

CEOs of Polish Internet firms admit they are worried about the possibility of international web portals that are said to be interested in the local market.

Earlier this week Poland's small community of web-based companies was swept by rumors of imminent arrival of yahoo.pl, a Polish language version of the global Internet portal. Yahoo! representatives refused to either deny or comment on the rumors.

Analysts say appearance of international new media companies would probably hurt existing players. Right now the market is largely divided into four main players - ITI Holdings' Onet.pl, Telekomunikacja Polska subsidiary Wirtualna Polska, Interia.pl, a Cracow-based portal supported by ComArch software house and RMF FM pop radio station and Gazeta.pl, controlled by local media powerhouse Agora S.A. Both Onet.pl and Interia.pl are listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange.

Various sources estimate total value of Poland's Internet advertising market last year at between 45 and 50 million zloty.

Last year Polish authorities gave state-owned PKO BP bank exclusive rights to sell government bonds to retail investors.

Warsaw-based data carrier SM-Media has announced plans to raise several million zloty in an IPO on Warsaw Stock Exchange to pay for new business telco and data services, as well as expansion into prepaid phone card and wireless radio. Founded thirteen years ago as a newspaper publishing joint-venture, SM-Media now trades on CeTO over-the-counter market. Closely held company was listed in October of last year without selling stock to the public.

SM-Media has annual sales of approximately 22 million zloty, or just under 5 million dollars.
