Interest rates

Rate hike ?a certainty? after May

inflation data, economists say

Polish consumer prices rose as much as 3.4 percent in May, prompting new speculations that the country?s Monetary Policy Council would raise interest rates at its next meeting later this month. Inflation figures released Monday by the Main Office of Statistics were much higher than consensus estimates that ranged from 2.8 to 3.2 percent, while central bank?s own inflation target is just 0.1 percent higher than yesterday?s data.

Economists blame high oil prices and the cost of Poland?s entry into the European Union for the surge of inflation.
